Hitting the approach shot is the key
That is the number one determinant in "strokes gained" on the tour. Not driving accuracy/fairways hit, not driving distance, not putting. It's the ability to hit the approach shot tight and within make-able birdie putt range.
As to putting, the tour players on average make 75% from 4 feet, 50% from 8 feet, and 25% from 15 feet. However, they make 95% from 3 feet (from the 10 year studyusing 2001-10 stats that resulted in strokes-gained-putting metric). TV gives you a jaded perspective. They show all these guys making great putts so you think that's the norm. The reality is they aren't showing you the even greater number of guys missing putts.
